Friday News Roundup: CIAA Comes To Charlotte; Proposed Teacher Pay Raises by Gov. Cooper; Lowes Cuts

Friday, February 24, 2017

The CIAA comes to town despite HB2.  Governor Roy Cooper proposes pay increases for teachers.  We get an update on student assignment at CMS. And major cuts hit the Mooresville headquarters of Lowe's – all among the stories Mike Collins and a panel of journalists will discuss during the local news roundup - when Charlotte Talks.

On this edition of the news roundup, the CIAA tournament is in the Queen City this week for the 12th consecutive year. After the passing of House Bill 2, the NCAA, the ACC and the NBA have all pulled events from the state, but this signature tournament has remained. Why that might be and what will be the economic impact of the tournament this week?

Governor Roy Cooper has proposed pay increases for teachers over the next two years- we’ll talk about how that proposal was received by teachers in the Charlotte area, and what the increase could do to raise our standing in teacher pay across the country.

Also in education, an update on student assignment at CMS with an option for students at low performing schools to transfer out, and some new numbers on Mecklenburg families choosing charter schools.

Majorjob cuts were announced this week at the Lowe’s headquarters- 430 in Mooresville and 70 in Wilkesboro. It's part of a restructuring move announced last month that eliminated 2,400 jobs nationwide. What the newest cuts mean for local Lowes' workers.

Mike Collins and a panel of journalists will take you through those stories and much more on the Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup.
