Prosecutors Will Resubmit Voluntary Manslaughter Charge Against CMPD Officer

State Attorney General Roy Cooper says his office will resubmit a voluntary manslaughter charge against suspended CMPD officer Randall Kerrick on Monday. Meanwhile, CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe Wednesday addressed the grand jury's decision not to indict Kerrick who shot 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell ten times in mid-September. Monroe made the decision to charge Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter less than 24 hours after the shooting.

A CMPD officer charged with voluntary manslaughter after shooting a man 10 times had his first court appearance on Tuesday. At the court hearing, the judge scheduled the next court date for the morning of October 7. Meanwhile, defense attorney Michael Greene says he believes officer Randall Kerrick was justified in his shooting.

CMPD Officer Charged With Manslaughter, Due In Court Tuesday

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer charged with voluntary manslaughter is due in court Tuesday.

Officer Randall Kerrick shot and killed an unarmed man over the weekend. His name was Jonathan Ferrell, and he was 24 years old. He wrecked his car in northeast Charlotte early Saturday morning, and then banged on the door of a home nearby around 2 a.m. The woman living there called the police.

When officers arrived, he ran toward them. Officer Kerrick fired several rounds, killing him.

CMPD Officer Shoots, Kills Unarmed 24-Year-Old

UPDATE: The  attorney for Jonathan Ferrell's family is holding a press conference in uptown Monday morning at 11:00, and the Charlotte NAACP is holding a rally at 1:00 at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. WFAE will update this story throughout the day.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged one of their own officers with voluntary manslaughter over the weekend. Officer Randall Kerrick shot and killed an unarmed man. .

Early Saturday morning, a 24-year-old man wrecked his car in northeast Charlotte and went looking for help.
