Tobacco Headquarters To Become Hotel, Apartments

A Philadelphia company has announced plans to buy and re-develop the historic R.J. Reynolds Tobacco headquarters in Winston-Salem. PMC Property Group plans to spend $7.8 million to buy the 22-story building, and to invest an estimated $60 million overall in the conversion.  Plans call for a boutique hotel on the bottom six floors, and 120 luxury residential units above.

Tuesday is the final deadline for people to sign up for health insurance this year through healthcare.gov. The online exchange, or marketplace, is a signature part of the Affordable Care Act, and it's supposed to make shopping for health insurance as easy as shopping for other products online. Over the past six months, WFAE's Michael Tomsic has been meeting with two young North Carolinians as they tried to use the exchange. Here are their stories.

Governor McCrory On Teacher Raises, Obamacare

Governor Pat McCrory says he wants state lawmakers to give teachers a pay raise when they meet in May for the short session.  He plans to have a salary proposal ready in February.  McCrory made those remarks on WFAE's Charlotte Talks Monday morning. 

The state’s current budget for next year sets aside a $500-a-year raise for the top 25 percent of teachers who decide to give up their tenure and sign a four-year contract.
