The Department of Public Safety says two employees at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City have been killed after inmates set a fire in an unsuccessful escape attempt.  The department has identified the victims as 35-year-old correctional officer Justin Smith and 50-year-old Veronica Darden.

In a half-hour debate Thursday organized by the League of Women Voters, Charlotte's two mayoral candidates went head-to-head on a variety of city issues. Democrat Vi Lyles and Republican Kenny Smith differed on taxes, tolls and city priorities. But they started by agreeing on one thing - the need for new leadership as they compete to replace current Democratic mayor Jennifer Roberts.

There were two fatal shootings in Charlotte on Sunday.  CMPD  says officers responding to a call of shots fired on John Penn Circle in east Charlotte around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, October 8 found 35-year-old Keith Nmoma with an apparent gunshot wound.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.
