One of the best metrics the federal government puts out to describe how much money Americans make is median household income. It’s the point where half of households are above, and half are below.

In Charlotte and across the country, there’s a growing need at community health centers. They treat patients regardless of their ability to pay. And the increased need is a surprising result to some clinic leaders, who thought the Affordable Care Act would mean fewer people needing charity care.

Some doctors in North Carolina still haven't gotten paid for Medicaid services five months after the state rolled out a new system for Medicaid providers, called NC Tracks. But the system is improving, according to a legislative oversight committee that met Monday.

The new system North Carolina uses to process Medicaid payments is still a nightmare for many providers. That's one of several controversies that legislative oversight committees focused on Tuesday in Raleigh. Lawmakers also found out more about food stamp delays. And they directed pointed questions at Secretary of Health and Human Services Aldona Wos and her top staff.

Relations between school districts and counties can get tense during budget season.  But it’s way beyond that in Union County.  The school board has brought in a mediator and the county has sued the school district for financial information.

The North Carolina legislature is poised to pass a temporary fix to prevent more than 1,300 people in group homes from losing their place to live. The legislation allows them to continue receiving Medicaid services in their group homes until July.

This is probably the last temporary fix for people in group homes with a mental illness, developmental disability or Alzheimer's.
