Charlotte Region/China Connection

  Last month, mayors from North Carolina and Alabama cities and towns visited China to learn about ways that their municipalities can do business with China. Mayor Jill Swain of Huntersville came home with new knowledge and optimism about a future tie with China and our region. Now officials from China are visiting the Charlotte region to learn more about opportunities here. But this isn't just an isolated potential relationship. Business with China is on the rise in North Carolina and throughout the South. We'll talk with Chinese and Charlotte area officials about why the south and our region are attractive to Chinese business people and what kinds of ties may be formed in the future, when Charlotte Talks.

Using Technology To Combat Poverty

We'll meet one of the leaders of an organization using an innovative strategy to fight global poverty. Jon Mitchell of CARE USA says that the technology that we take for granted in America, like cell phones, can be used to help end poverty in developing countries. Fall is a time for festivals - this weekend the Festival of India celebrates the culture and food of that country. Last Spring, we visited with several Indians who have made their home here. We talked about the transition and what they’ve done to make Charlotte home. We’ve invited them back, this time to talk about how you can enjoy their festival. We’ll talk about art and dance and - Indian food - among other things.

Twelve In Twelve: The Next Chapter

A year ago, three intrepid Charlotteans set out on a round-the-world mission.  A father and his two sons - then 8-year-old Buck and his teenage brother, Jackson, visited twelve countries in twelve months.  But this wasn’t a vacation.  They chose the places they went so they could help the people in those countries in some way and all of this was Jackson’s idea.  From nearly drowning in Thailand, to helping run a nursery school in Tanzania, they share their adventure of good will.
