Headline Roundup: NC Unemployment Down, Chiquita Merger, More

North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell a tenth of a point in September to 6.7 percent. That’s according to the state Division of Employment Security. The dip follows two months of slight increases in the state’s jobless rate.

In South Carolina, the unemployment rate rose three tenths of a percent to 6.6 percent. The national average jobless rate for September was  5.9 percent.

Slew Of Mergers Not Unique To Charlotte

The discount chain Dollar General officially launched a hostile takeover bid for Matthews-based rival Family Dollar today. Ten miles up the road, banana giant Chiquita signed an agreement to open its books to Cutrale-Safra—a collaboration of Brazilian companies—which threatened a hostile takeover. The merger battles are part of a larger, post-recession economic trend.

Brazilian Companies Bid For Chiquita

Since March, Banana giant Chiquita has been preparing to merge with Fyffes, an Irish fruit company, to become the world’s largest banana seller. Today, Chiquita received an unsolicited, enticing offer from two Brazilian companies, which could potentially derail the deal.

Headline Roundup: McCrory Appoints SBI Acting Director

Governor Pat McCrory has appointed an acting director of the State Bureau of Investigation. B.W. Collier is a 26-year veteran of the bureau, during which time he has served in a variety of roles, including drug investigator, pilot, and bomb squad commander. He was appointed director of Alcohol Law Enforcement last year.

The state budget signed by Gov. McCrory today transfers the SBI from the Department of Justice to the Department of Public Safety, where it will operate as an independent agency.

Chiquita Blames Higher Costs, Weather For $25 Million First-Quarter Loss

Chiquita Brands International Friday reported a loss of $25 million in the first quarter, blaming increasing costs and extreme weather. But, the Charlotte-based company says it’s still on track to meet its 2014 goals.

River Run In The Spotlight As The Chiquita Classic Comes To Town

Groundskeepers were hard at work through the weekend and hundreds of local volunteers took up their posts Monday morning as River Run Country Club prepared to host the largest professional golf 

  tournament ever staged in Lake Norman – the Chiquita Classic. Club officials said more 25,000 tickets have been sold for the event, which kicked off with a pro-am tournament and practice rounds Monday and continues through Sunday, Sept. 8.

River Run Getting Ready For Big Moment, The Chiquita Classic

River Run Country Club is getting ready for its closeup, the biggest moment in its 22-year history. From Sept. 2-8, the golf course designed by Robert Walker and Raymond Floyd will host the Chiquita Classic, one of four important late-season tournaments on the 2013 Web.com tour.

Chiquita CEO Promises Shareholders No More 'Distractions'

In 2012, Chiquita moved its headquarters from Cincinnati to Charlotte, where it now occupies several floors of the NASCAR Plaza.

"A celebration of new beginnings" is what Chiquita CEO Ed Lonergan called the company's annual meeting in Charlotte on Thursday.  Only about 100 shareholders attended – and most were Chiquita employees.
