Charlotte Homicides

Police are investigating a homicide that happened yesterday afternoon.  CMPD says officers were responding to a call of assault with a deadly weapon around 3:40 p.m. on Farmer Street in west Charlotte.

There were two fatal shootings in Charlotte on Sunday.  CMPD  says officers responding to a call of shots fired on John Penn Circle in east Charlotte around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, October 8 found 35-year-old Keith Nmoma with an apparent gunshot wound.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It may sound strange, but the total number of homicides that occurred in Charlotte last year has changed. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department says the number is higher. 

The fatal shooting of Jonathan Cauthen brings the number of homicides in Charlotte this year to 67. That was the total in the city for 2016. Reporter Sarah Delia, who has been tracking homicides, spoke to All Things Considered host Mark Rumsey about what patterns have emerged and what police say is contributing to the growing number.

The number of homicides in Charlotte this year is now 67, the same number as in all of last year. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police say the latest killing happened early Thursday in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood, off Beatties Ford Road in west Charlotte.

Police have arrested and charged a man with a homicide that happened Wednesday night in northeast Charlotte. 

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police say the city's latest murder victim and suspect knew one another before a fatal shooting Tuesday off Beatties Ford Road. Twenty-six-year-old Derricka Banner of Lenoir, a transgender woman whose legal name was Derrick Lee Banner, was found shot to death around 3 a.m. Tuesday in a vehicle on Rosetta Street.  

There’s been another homicide in Charlotte.  CMPD says it happened in the 1400 block of Rosetta Street, which is off Beatties Ford Road, around 3 a.m.  Officers were responding to a call of assault with a deadly weapon and found a male with an apparent gunshot wound inside a vehicle.  CMPD says officers are looking for possible witnesses.  It marks the 64th homicide in Charlotte this year.  There were 67 in all of last year.

Updated at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5 - CMPD arrested Donny Lewis Franklin on Monday and charged him with murder in the death of Jeannine Skinner.

CMPD says it's investigating a homicide that happened last night.   The department says officers responding to a call of assault with a deadly weapon around 7:30 found a male with an apparent gunshot wound in the front yard of a residence on Uppergate Lane in east Charlotte.   He was pronounced dead at the scene.   It's the 61st homicide in Charlotte this year.  This time last year there were 37.
