Bold Visions Compete For Eastland Mall Redevelopment

Two developers have offered bold visions for what the closed Eastland Mall could become.

One proposal focuses on building movie studios while another would create an entertainment complex with a ski slope, ice skating rink and skateboard park.

Both developers, who submitted formal proposals to the city of Charlotte on Friday, also envision residential and retail construction in later phases.

Eastland Mall To Be Demolished, Redevelopment Plans Coming This Week

The Charlotte City Council is considering spending $871,000 to demolish Eastland Mall so a private developer can breathe new life into the site.

Charlotte taxpayers spent $13 million last summer to buy the deserted Eastland Mall. The city council will vote Tuesday night on spending another $800,000 to tear the mall down. City leaders are hopeful the demolition will make way for new life on the blighted block.

Carolina Theatre's Fate Still Up In The Air

The full City Council will vote to decide who will renovate the Carolina Theatre on December 17th.

The non-profit Foundation for the Carolinas won the first round of the bid for the Carolina Theatre this week—for $1. A city council committee chose that bid from the Foundation instead of a half million dollar offer from the company that developed the NC Music Factory. But, it's far from a done deal.

The Carolina Theatre sits on Sixth and Tryon, and once upon a time, it hosted megastars like Elvis, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra. For the past thirty years it’s lain unused and neglected. But now the theater, and its first-class location, has three serious suitors.
