Charlotte Asks FAA For Final Answer On Airport Control

The City of Charlotte has asked the Federal Aviation Administration to decide who will run Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The letter comes weeks after a judge ruled in the city’s favor that a state-created commission does not have authority to take control of the airport, unless the FAA approves it.

Charlotte’s city council has run the airport for 78 years.

City attorney Bob Hagemann says the city wants a final answer.

“There has been a cloud over the airport going on two years. We think it’s time to work hard to remove that cloud,” says Hagemann.

Judge Will Rule On Control Of Charlotte Airport Next Week

The Charlotte airport commission has been meeting, since a state law formed it last year, but it has no power, while the lawsuit runs its course.

Charlotte City Council Continuing Airport Lawsuit, Despite New State Law

The Charlotte city council met behind closed doors Monday night with its lawyers to discuss, once again, the ongoing lawsuit against state lawmakers and the airport commission they created to take control of Charlotte Douglas. The council will continue the suit, despite another, recent state law intended to stop it.

Airport Commission To Discuss Orr's Role

The usual holiday bustle is picking up at Charlotte Douglas, but behind the scenes a power struggle between city and state lawmakers continues. A commission created by the state to run the airport meets for the second time tonight. It can’t do much yet, except self-destruct.

A judge has kept Charlotte Douglas in the hands of the city council and away from the commission, while a lawsuit makes its way through court.

McCrory Backs Council In Airport Fight, Says Time To 'Move On' From Jerry Orr

Governor Pat McCrory said Monday he supports the Charlotte City Council position in the fight with state lawmakers over control of Charlotte Douglas Airport—including the city’s removal of former aviation director Jerry Orr from his long-time post. Until now, McCrory has shied away from taking a public stance on the issue.

At the end of an hour-long interview on WFAE’s Charlotte Talks, host Mike Collins asked McCrory the question.
