Wilmore Elementary School Designated As Historic

Wilmore Elementary School opened in 1925. It's owned by Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and is proposed for historic status.
CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION

The Charlotte City Council approved historic landmark status Monday night for the old Wilmore Elementary School and the land around it on West Boulevard.

The vote came without discussion. It wouldn't prevent future development of the site, but it will require a historical review of any project or changes to the building. Some city council members had questioned whether the designation would prevent affordable housing from being developed on the site.

The building was built in 1925 and is owned by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. But it's no longer used as a school.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission supported the designation, noting that it was the only school built in a working-class neighborhood that dates from 1906.
