As the dust settles on the 2016 election, both the Democratic and Republican parties have taken a step back to assess what went right and wrong and plot out what’s next for their party.
Republicans were victorious in electing their nominee to the White House and kept control of the House and Senate. But does that mean everything is picture perfect for the party? It was a contentious road to victory. The GOP was deeply divided over their candidate from the beginning and Donald Trump did not win the popular vote.
Many questions remain. What kind of President will Mr. Trump be? Will he uphold Republican ideals and values? Will he keep his campaign promises and live up to the expectations of the voters who helped elect him? If he is not successful, where will that leave the party?
Here at home in North Carolina, the Governor’s race isn’t quite sewn up for the Republicans - it’s still too close to call between Pat McCrory and Roy Cooper. If McCrory doesn’t keep the Governor’s Mansion, how does the party plan to govern with a Democrat in that office?
