Sun. Headlines: TV & Photos Allowed at Kerrick Trial; 2 Die in Cornelius Crash

Still photography and video coverage will be allowed in the courtroom when the trial of former CMPD officer Randall Kerrick begins Monday. But Judge Robert Ervin also ruled Friday that live streaming of the trial proceedings will not be permitted, and reporters will not be allowed to make live social media postings from the courtroom.

Kerrick is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell two years ago.  Kerrick and two other officers encountered Ferrell when they responded to a 9-1-1 call in east Charlotte in September 2013.

Ferrell, an aspiring engineer, had been involved in an accident nearby and police believe he was seeking help when he knocked on the home's door. When police arrived, Ferrell was no longer near the home and ran toward the officers. Kerrick, who is white, fired 12 shots. Ten hit the unarmed Ferrell and killed him. The other officers didn’t fire a shot.

Opening arguments begin Monday. The trial is expected to last at least a month.

FATAL WRECK IN CORNELIUS

Two people died overnight in Cornelius, after a speeding driver fleeing from police lost control and crashed. The wreck happened around 1:30am Sunday near Lake Norman’s Peninsula neighborhood. Police said officers tried to stop the car for speeding on West Catawba Avenue, but the driver continued onto Jetton Road.  The car nearly struck a second police car, and police said they gave up pursuit.  A few minutes later, the car struck a tree and burst into flames. Cornelius police said the driver and a passenger were killed. Their names have not been released.

MAN CHARGED IN GASTON CRASH

Police say a 61-year-old Gaston County man with a history of drunken driving convictions will be charged with second-degree murder for a crash that killed his girlfriend.  The Gaston Gazette reports that David Taylor of Bessemer City crashed his Corvette on June 9 after losing control of the car, veering off the road, hitting an embankment and landing in a creek. Fifty-year-old Kimberly Hardin died after the crash.  Police say Taylor was impaired and speeding when he crashed. His license was also revoked. He's been convicted at least four times since 1993 for driving while impaired.  Bessemer City Police Chief Tom Ellis says Taylor faces charges for second-degree murder and driving while impaired. Ellis says warrants will likely be served as soon as Taylor leaves a medical rehabilitation center.

WHIRLING DISEASE FOUND IN NC TROUT

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission says whirling disease, a disorder affecting trout, has been confirmed in rainbow trout collected from Watauga River – the first appearance of the disease in North Carolina. The trout were discovered near Foscoe, in Watauga County. Whirling disease affects rainbow and brook trout, two species found in North Carolina. The disease damages cartilage and skeletal tissue, causing fish to swim in a whirling motion. It doesn't infect humans or pets, and eating an infected fish is not known to be harmful. The commission has suspended stocking fish raised at its three trout hatcheries until it can confirm that hatchery trout are free of the disease. Hatchery fish are also being collected and being sent to an Auburn University lab for testing.

PANTHERS' RECEIVER HILL INJURED

It was a bad week for Carolina Panthers wide receiver Stephen Hill. On Saturday, he was carted off the field with a right leg injury during pre-season practice. He was cited Tuesday by police in Concord, North Carolina for knowingly possessing drug paraphernalia with intent to use. The former New York Jets' second-round draft pick spent last season on the Panthers’ practice squad and was battling for a spot on roster. Coach Ron Rivera said the arrest wouldn't affect Hill's chances of making the team.
