Since August, some board members have been calling for the audit, saying poverty designations are determined by the number of students on free or reduced price lunches. That was after the district learned that 60-percent of a very small sample of applicants did not qualify for the federal program. A Mecklenburg County Commissioner offered 100-thousand dollars in rainy day funds for an audit of a much larger sample. Superintendent Peter Gorman today responded to the offer. "I accept the 100K on behalf of the district. Don't think we'll use it for that purpose. I'd like to use it to buy back media assistants," he said. Gorman was referring to 93 media assistant positions the district recently cut because of the tight budget year. Gorman says C-M-S is still trying to clarify how large of a sample size F-D-A rules allow.
