The widow of Keith Lamont Scott, who was fatally shot one year ago, revisited the site of the shooting Wednesday. Rakeyia Scott was accompanied to the north Charlotte apartment complex on Lexington Circle by an attorney and family members, including Scott's children and four-month-old grandchild.
Standing several feet away from where her husband was shot last year, Scott told reporters that the past year had been a year of grieving.
"You took my rock. You took my children's rock," she said, "The officers were able to go home and be with their family, but my husband wasn't able to come home to his family."
Scott also said she had lost all faith in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and said the department had perpetrated falsehoods about her husband, though she did not provide specifics.
"What I want is for the community and for Charlotte to understand that the truth was not given by CMPD," she said, "At the end of the day, my husband didn't deserve to die on September 20 in that spot over there. He didn't deserve that."
The actual parking space where Scott was killed has since been altered by the apartment complex. The short row of parking spaces where the encounter took place last year has since been repaved and incorporated into a gentle curve of the road leading out of the complex.
Scott also said she has not spoken to the officer who fired the fatal shots - Officer Brentley Vinson - and that she had no desire to.
District Attorney Andrew Murray ruled the shooting justified in November, and the officers involved faced no internal discipline or criminal charges.
