Post Office To Remove Dozens Of Boxes In Advance Of DNC

The United States Postal Service is removing 38 of its blue collection boxes and sealing up mail chutes within a three-block radius of Time Warner Cable Arena because of the Democratic National Convention.

The decision affects between 1,500 and 2,000 customers in uptown Charlotte. Those customers will have to go to the office on 201 North McDowell Street or the Charlotte Processing Facility at 2901 Scott Futrell Drive to pick up and send mail.

Monica Robbs of the US Postal Service says the post office routinely removes collection boxes around large events with heavy security like the Superbowl and political conventions.

"In leaving those boxes open and we're not able to check them, then there are some security risks posed," Robbs says. Postal officials say they have been preparing for the removal of boxes for the DNC for three months.

"It's a one-time event and you know our slogan is neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow and the DNC certainly isn't going to stop us from delivering." The boxes will be removed a week before the convention to give police time to set up barricades.
