PayPal CEO: HB 2 'Simply Not Tenable With Our Basic Values'

This picture was posted on Gov. McCrory's Facebook page March 18, the day PayPal announced it was coming to Charlotte. To McCrory's right are John McCabe, PayPal's senior vice-president of Global Operations, and Mayor Jennifer Roberts.

Two weeks ago, Gov. Pat McCrory stood with Mayor Jennifer Roberts at the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce to celebrate a big jobs announcement. PayPal was going to open a global operations center in Charlotte. The plan called for 400 jobs with an average pay of $51,000.

“North Carolina is the ideal destination for innovation-based, worldwide companies like PayPal," McCrory said at the announcement.

On Tuesday, PayPal CEO Dan Schulman announced the expansion to Charlotte is dead because of legislation that lawmakers passed five days later, and quickly signed by Governor McCrory. House Bill 2, among other things, excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from the state’s discrimination protections.

Speaking with WFAE’s Tom Bullock, PayPal CEO Dan Schulman says the legislation is unacceptable.

Tom Bullock decided to trade the khaki clad masses and traffic of Washington DC for Charlotte in 2014. Before joining WFAE, Tom spent 15 years working for NPR. Over that time he served as everything from an intern to senior producer of NPR’s Election Unit. Tom also spent five years as the senior producer of NPR’s Foreign Desk where he produced and reported from Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Haiti, Egypt, Libya, Lebanon among others. Tom is looking forward to finally convincing his young daughter, Charlotte, that her new hometown was not, in fact, named after her.
