Another Charlotte area charter school has abruptly shut down. Entrepreneur High School, which focused on vocational training, closed down Friday after just 5 months in operation.
The viability of Entrepreneur High was in question even before the first student walked through the door. The school received the lowest possible rating on a ‘ready to open’ report from the North Carolina Office of Charter Schools.
Still, Entrepreneur was given the green light to open. And now it is closed.
The school predicted enrollment of 180 students in its first year. Just 49 were enrolled as of earlier this week.
Robert Hillman, the Chairman of Entrepreneur High, told a state board earlier this week the school had just $14 in the bank.
Calls to Entrepreneur High School went unanswered.
A spokesman for Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools says they’ve reached out to the charter school and offered to have someone onsite to help students transfer back into public schools. But Entrepreneur has yet to respond to that offer.
This is the third charter school to close in Charlotte over the past 12 months due to low enrollment and financial problems. The state has given the green light for three others to open here next year.
