Recently, police shootings have been documented by by-stander video. Often, that doesn’t tell the whole story. Now one Georgia police officer has produced a documentary explaining the perspective of the police- during, and after an officer-involved shooting. Mike Collins hears from the filmmaker, a CMPD officer and a criminal justice expert.
Officer involved shootings have made headlines and sparked controversy nationwide as well as right here in Charlotte in recent years.
Many times the officers involved in the shootings are vilified, publicly shamed, whether or not the shooting turns out to be warranted.
A Georgia police officer sought to shed light on what officers who are involved in police shootings go through behind the scenes, and created a documentary- “Officer Involved.” It follows officers who have been involved in deadly force incidents to examine the impact of the shootings on women and men in law enforcement.
Mike Collins spends the hour with producer and director—and Officer P.W. Shaver- as well as a CMPD officer and a criminal justice expert to discuss the officer perspective of police shootings.
P.W. Shaver was in Charlotte to talk about his film last week when he visited the Levine Museum of the New South. His talk was part of the exhibition currently on display at the Museum, "K(NO)W Justice, K(NO)W Peace". The exhibition will continue through October.
