Mayor Anthony Foxx addresses the conference in the opening session. Over 600 senior-level representatives from the nuclear industry are in Charlotte for the annual Nuclear Energy Assembly Conference. Mayor Anthony Foxx made a few opening remarks, complete with a half-joking invitation. "And with that, I want to welcome you all to Charlotte, and I want you to know that 20 years from now, I expect all of your companies to be right here," said Foxx. Among other subjects, the conference addresses technological developments in the industry and lessons learned from the Fukushima disaster. It comes just a few months after the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the construction of two nuclear reactors near Columbia, South Carolina and two in Georgia. One of the main speakers Wednesday is Gregory Jaczko, the chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Jaczko announced Monday that he's resigning, effective as soon as his successor is confirmed by Congress. Jaczko has been criticized over the last year by lawmakers and colleagues for bullying tactics in the workplace. He has consistently denied those reports.
