Novant Health Applies To Build New Hospital In Ballantyne

Novant Health wants to build a new 36-bed hospital in Ballantyne. If approved by state regulators, the 161,000 square foot hospital would open by 2023. Novant Health has multiple doctors’ offices in the area already. Atrium Health, the other major health system in the Charlotte market has multiple facilities in the area as well.

This week, Atrium also filed with state regulators to open a 40-bed hospital in Union County to open in 2022. In order to build certain kinds of medical facilities, companies have to go through an approval process known as a "Certificate of Need." These laws exist in several states and are used to determine how much of a need there is for a specific type of medical facility — based on population and other factors.

This month, Novant opened its 15th hospital in Mint Hill. The 145,000 square foot 46-bed community hospital also has a series of doctors’ offices attached to it.
