NC 'Reluctantly' Back in NCAA's Good Graces / George Saunders, Author Of Lincoln In The Bardo

National Book Critics Circle

Wednesday, April 5 2017

Short-story writer George Saunders, whom Time calls simply the best short-story writer writing in English, joins host Mike Collins to talk about his debut novel, Lincoln in the Bardo. First, an update on the NCAA's reaction to the state's repeal of House Bill 2.

PART ONE

The NCAA's Board of Governors announced Tuesday it "reluctantly" decided to put North Carolina back into consideration for college championship events following last week's repeal and replacement of House Bill 2. The Atlantic Coast Conference has already said it would return its football title game to Charlotte because of the repeal.

But the NCAA made clear it "remains concerned" about the moratorium on anti-discrimination protections in North Carolina, a provision in House Bill 142, the legislation that rolled back HB2.

Bob Morgan, president and CEO, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce (@CLTChamberBob)

PART TWO

The man who Time Magazine calls “the best short story writer in English- not ‘one of’, not ‘arguably’, but the Best” and the man who Stephen Colbert says is “quite possibly” his favorite living author, has just released his first novel.

George Saunders is a National Book Award finalist who has written four popular collections of short stories, including his most recent, Tenth of December. He’s now trying his hand at a full length novel with Lincoln in The Bardo, referring not to President Abraham Lincoln, but to Lincoln’s son Willie, who died at age 11.

George Saunders is in Charlotte to speak to students at CPCC during the school’s Sensoria event, but first he joins host Mike Collins to talk about short stories, the switch to longer form writing, being a many-times guest on Stephen Colbert’s shows and more, when Charlotte Talks.

Guest:

George Saunders, short story writer and novelist who wrote Lincoln in the Bardo.

Event: George Saunders speaks at CPCC's Sensoria on April 5th. Infohere.
