CMPD Animal Care & Control
Carter, seen here having a snack at CMPD Animal Care and Control, was moved to his forever home Wednesday, December 2, 2015.

In March, a macaque monkey named Carter escaped from his caretaker's car in a Charlotte hospital parking lot. Since it is illegal to own monkeys in North Carolina, Carter had to be surrendered to Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control. His temporary caretakers said goodbye this week. Carter's new home is a primate sanctuary.

In the months leading up to his move, Animal Care and Controlshared pictures and updates of Carter enjoying his stayThese emails from Public Information Specialist Melissa Knicely were always enjoyed in this newsroom.

The North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance arranged for Carter to be transferred to his new home in San Antonio this week. The trip from Charlotte to Texas was documented on social media by the team traveling with the monkey, even becoming a Twitter-trending topic. Following #TravelMonkey, lots of people across Charlotte and the country took a much-needed break from the heavy news of Wednesday to enjoy details of Carter's trip.
