Lawmakers Override Perdue Vetoes

In one day, North Carolina lawmakers have overrode Gov. Perdue's vetoes of the budget, a water-down version of the Racial Justice Act and legislation that allows "fracking" of natural gas. Lawmakers overrode Governor Bev Perdue's veto of the budget adjustment 74-45 in the House. Seven Democratic representatives broke ranks to vote with Republicans. The Senate voted 31 to 10. Legislators also overrode the governor's veto of a bill that would water down the Racial Justice Act. The Act allows death row prisoners to appeal their sentences using statistical evidence to show discrimination. And lawmakers overturned Perdue's veto of a bill that would open the door to natural gas fracking in the state. It was overridden in the House by only one vote. Democratic Representative Becky Carney of Charlotte was heard saying she pushed the wrong button by mistake. But legislative votes cannot be changed if they affect the outcome of a bill. Democratic Representative Susi Hamilton of Wilmington also voted to override the measure. Last night, House and Senate leaders inserted a $60 million dollar film tax credit into a technical corrections bill that would benefit her district.
