A half century ago, there was no Lake Norman area because there was no Lake Norman. It was created on a muggy September morning in 1959 when Governor Hodges set off the first charge of dynamite for the Cowan's Ford dam project that blocked the Catawba River and created the state's largest lake and, by extension, the burgeoning part of Charlotte we see today. We look at the history, growth and economic impact of the Lake Norman region.
