Tanger Outlets is building a big, new shopping center in southwest Charlotte. The Greensboro-based retail company said the outlet will bring hundreds of jobs and new tax revenue to the area.
If you’re a shopper, the draw of a new outlet center with about 90 stores is pretty obvious. But what about if you’re not?
Tanger Outlets’ Vice President of Development Charles Worsham said it’ll also bring benefits to southwest Charlotte that go beyond finding that perfect dress, jacket or pair of shoes.
“During construction, which will take about a year, we anticipate 300 plus jobs being created through the various trades in this market,” Worsham said. “And long term, you look at a steady contributor to the tax base of the city and county, as well as the long-term job opportunities created there.”
Worsham estimates the new Tanger outlet will generate more than $10 million a year in sales tax revenue for Mecklenburg County. He said it’ll also create more than 900 full- and part-time jobs, ranging from college students selling goods to retail professionals managing stores and the whole shopping center.
The outlet is expected to open off Interstate 485 and Steele Creek Road in 2014.
