GOP Maintains Supermajority In NC Legislature

North Carolina General Assembly

Republicans are maintaining their supermajority in the North Carolina state legislature. That means they can continue to easily bypass Democratic opposition and override the governor's vetoes.

Republicans won more than three-fifths of the seats in the North Carolina House and Senate yesterday, as they did in 2012.

They picked up an additional seat in the Senate. Tom McInnis defeated incumbent Gene McLaurin to represent a five-county area that includes Stanly and Rowan counties. In the House, Republicans lost three seats, including one in Wake County and two in the Asheville area.

All in all, they'll still be able to override the veto of their fellow Republican Governor Pat McCrory. McCrory has vetoed three bills since becoming governor, and his own party overrode him on two. The third bill, which adjusts the state's unemployment insurance program, may come up again in the House next year.
