County commissioners Wednesday night approved an exchange of land with the Charlotte Housing Authority that will allow the expansion of Pearl Street Park off Kenilworth Avenue. The deal also could lead to more affordable housing in the Midtown area.
The county will swap 3-acre Baxter Street Park for a 2-acre parcel that abuts nearby Pearl Street Park.
Because the two parcels aren't the same size, the Housing Authority also will pay the county $2 million. That money will help pay for improving baseball and soccer fields and other work.
Officials said the Housing Authority agreed to the trade because it's more suitable for an affordable housing development. A spokeswoman said Wednesday the authority has no immediate plans for the site. The authority will pay for the deal with federal affordable housing funds.
