CMS To Tackle Magnets For 2017, Boundaries For 2018

Crafting CMS's student assignment plan will be a two-year process. The board released a timeline Tuesday that shows CMS will first find ways to increase students' access to magnet schools and programs. At Tuesday's board meeting, CMS Superintendent Ann Clark said that accomplishes several things.

"Leading with choice, letting our families move toward something that's exciting, exercising one of our guiding principles where we weight socio-economic status and an assignment to a low-performing school," said Clark.

The plan is to get those changes in place by the fall of 2017. The second phase involves reviewing school boundaries. The board wants those changes approved in time for the fall of 2018.

Board members had their first public meeting last night with the consultant they hired to guide them through the student assignment process. Michael Alves and his team will be coming back to Charlotte for the second board meeting of each month.

The board also agreed on a timeline for hiring a new superintendent. The board hopes to choose one by next March. Clark's contract runs through June 2017.
