CMS anticipates tough budget for 09-10

CMS was notified of these cuts a month ago. The district is in a position to better absorb much of these cutbacks because it had budgeted for 66 teaching positions that went unfilled. This was because CMS didn't have the growth it had forecast. Now, CMS Superintendent Peter Gorman says the worry is next year. "I just wanna be upfront with folks and say when you get to taking out that many millions of dollars, it's gonna be very, very difficult without having a direct impact on the classroom," he says. The Mecklenburg County manager recently told CMS to reduce its request for next school year by five percent or $17.5 million. Gorman has ordered CMS department heads to cut their budgets by 10 percent in anticipation of reduced appropriations from the county and the state for next school year.
