Twenty years ago tonight, Hurricane Hugo roared ashore near Charleston. A few hours later, hurricane-force winds hit Charlotte. The city was instantly thrown into an unexpected crisis mode, including massive power outages and streeets and yards littered with thousands of downed trees. Soon, the city was hanging on regular updates from Assistant City Manager Don Steger. In fact, we heard from Steger so much that he earned another unofficial title as the "Public Voice" of Hurricane Hugo. Mr. Steger is now retired from the city. He stopped by our studios today to share his recollections of Hugo.
