Charlotte Talks News Roundup: Carolina Senators Defend Sessions; MLS Funding Debate Continues

Friday, July 28, 2017

Republican senators from the Carolinas come to the defense of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Mecklenburg County commissioners might delay a vote on funding a soccer stadium. Mayor Jennifer Roberts calls President Trump's statements on transgender military members "cowardly." Mike Collins and a panel of local reporters review the week's top stories.

Republican senators from the Carolinas join the GOP cavalry defending Attorney General Sessions, with South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham leading the pushback to President Trump’s tweets attacking Sessions, warning there would be "holy hell to pay" if Sessions is fired.

Pledges made at Charlotte city hall last fall following the Keith Scott shooting surface in a City Council debate over use of tourism tax dollars. Meanwhile, the Mecklenburg County commission could postpone a vote slated for next week on county funding for a Major League Soccer stadium.

Transgender rights returned to the spotlight with President Trump tweeting he would reinstate a ban on trans service members, which Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts criticized as “cowardly” and “discriminatory.”

Taken to task by the U.S. Supreme Court for drawing illegal racial gerrymanders, North Carolina lawmakers this week began work on a new map for General Assembly districts.

Cam Newton and the squad arrive at Panthers training camp after the sacking of the general manager, and a not-so-flattering prediction for the upcoming season.

Mike Collins is joined by a panel of reporters for a look back at the week's news.
