Education is making headlines around the country as school safety becomes a key issue. That’s certainly a topic of conversation here, along with CMS doing a delicate dance with Matthews where they want to start their own charter schools. Sex education, truancy and the budget are also in the news. Host Mike Collins sits down with CMS superintendent Clayton Wilcox to talk all those things and more.
The list of headlines in education nationwide is extensive in 2018.
Here and around the country, conversations about school safety and how to achieve secure schools is at the top of the list, as well as the topic of teacher pay, amid walkouts in some states.
Here in Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board is in a battle with town commissioners in Matthews who want to open the door to a charter school there. Meanwhile, CMS Superintendent Clayton Wilcox has said that 50% of charter schools fail.
There’s talk in the district of prosecuting parents of truant students, while a conservative blogger is leading a charge to stop sexual education at CMS.
As if that weren't enough, it’s budget time, and Superintendent Wilcox has presented his budget – his first as Superintendent for CMS.
On this edition of Charlotte Talks, Clayton Wilcox joins Mike Collins to talk about the budget, and many of the other topics affecting CMS and education in general here and around the US.
