Charlotte Talks: Charlotte's New Planning Director On The City's Vision And Building Community

The Charlotte skyline in 2009. Cranes have become a common sight as the city continues to grow. Planning officials are working on revamping the city's development regulations to keep up with that growth.

Thursday, March 22, 2018

Our city’s new planning director sits down with Mike Collins to talk about his current focus - redesigning our zoning codes - and about his vision for the city.

City leaders are closely evaluating Charlotte's future growth, but one of the most important tools they're using to plan for that growth might put many of you to sleep. Charlotte is undergoing a major rewrite of its outdated zoning regulations. Although wonky, the zoning code directs what development goes where and ultimately determines the shape and look of Charlotte. It's been a lengthy process that's stretched over the last five years, three of which the city has been without a permanent planning director.

In a city that's growing exponentially, there's some major work to be done, and because everyone has a stake in how Charlotte grows, city officials are working to engage the community in the rewrite process.

We meet the man charged with this monumental task - Charlotte's new planning director Taiwo Jaiyeoba. We'll ask him about Charlotte's vision and discuss how the built environment can foster community.
