Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will add hours back to several branches soon that had been downsized with cutbacks. The library system began cutting hours a year-and-a-half ago when Mecklenburg County tightened the purse strings. A couple months ago, county commissioners decided to give the library an additional $3 million to begin extending hours. Starting September 6th that will happen at regional branches. The Beatties Ford, Independence, Morrison, North County, South County and University City branches will open an additional two days a week. That means those libraries will only be closed on Sunday. The Main Library and Imaginon will open on Sunday, but remain closed on Monday. The library system hired 57 employees to handle the extra hours. Hours will not change at any of the smaller community branches. They'll remain closed two to three days a week.
