Family and friends of a 34-year-old Davidson man are expressing concern over his disappearance in a remote area of Mexico last weekend. Patrick Braxton-Andrew has been missing since Sunday, Oct. 28, when he went on a hike near the town of Urique, in north-central Mexico.
According to his family, he was supposed to meet his brother in Mexico City on Tuesday but didn't show up. A family friend, Nancy Slagle, said Thursday morning that police and residents are searching the area around Urique.
"There is an active investigation going on," Slagle said. "They have been searching for him in the small town of Urique, and local people have been helping with the search, as well as the authorities."
His parents, Jean Braxton and Gary Andrew of Davidson, are also traveling in Mexico. They said in a note posted on Facebook that they're working with authorities and the US Embassy.
"We have been able to determine that he went missing Sunday afternoon while on a walk (he left about 4 pm) in the area around Urique. The hotel owner said he never returned from his walk. Someone had seen him walking near a ranch on Sunday afternoon," they wrote.
Friends and family say Braxton-Andrew is an avid hiker who is fluent in Spanish and has traveled throughout Central America. He teaches Spanish at Woodlawn School, a private school near Davidson. He's a North Mecklenburg High School and Davidson College graduate.
