Amazon Center Near Airport Could Employ 1,500

It’s looking like Amazon may soon build a new distribution center north of Charlotte Douglas airport that could bring 1,500 jobs. City council voted 10-0 last night to authorize the sale of the land for $7.5 million and to spend $13.4 million on infrastructure improvements.

Council member Lawana Mayfield said Monday Amazon won’t be hiring for the typical warehouse jobs. They’ll be jobs that require some technical skills.

"It’s going to give an opportunity for all those that have been going through technology training and looking at certifications....this is really going to help them in the logistics area expand their knowledge base," said Mayfield.

The project had simply been referred to as Project Quattro, but Mayor Vi Lyles confirmed Monday that it was indeed Amazon.

The company is expected to spend $200 million on the project. Amazon could receive additional incentives from Mecklenburg County and the state.

The online-retailer already has a distribution center in Concord and one is currently being built in Kannapolis.
