The Office of North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory announced Wednesday it would offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the shooting death of a police officer in Shelby last weekend.The Shelby police department says the 38-year-old officer, Tim Brackeen, was serving warrants to a 23-year-old man at his home in Shelby on Saturday. According to a press release, Brackeen and the man, Irving Fenner Jr, struggled, before Brackeen was shot in the chest. Brackeen was wearing a bullet-resistant vest at the time of the shooting. The department confirmed on social media that Brockeen died a Charlotte hospital on Monday. At a press conference later that day, Shelby Police Chief Jeffery Ledford said Brackeen is survived by his wife and daughter, and he thanked the community for its prayers and support. Police say they’re still searching for Fenner.
NCAA Decision 'Absurd,' NC Republican Party says
The North Carolina Republican Party is decrying the NCAA’s decision to pull seven championship events from North Carolina over House Bill 2, calling the decision “absurd” and “almost comical.” In a statement released late Tuesday night, party spokesperson Kami Mueller says she wishes the NCAA “was this concerned about the women who were raped at Baylor,” referring to number of sexual assault accusations against at least three football players brought to light at Baylor University in Texas this past spring.
The NCAA announced Tuesday its board of governors came the decision to cancel the events “because of the cumulative actions taken by the state concerning civil rights protections.” The athletic association will relocate the men’s basketball tournaments games set for Greensboro, along with the Division 1 women’s soccer championship, the Division III men’s and women’s soccer championships, and the Division II baseball championship. It hasn’t announced where the games will be relocated.
Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte Finds New Home
Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte says it’s found a home for the 2016-2017 season. The Charlotte Observer reports the theatre is moving to the building formerly occupied by Paradox Films and Digital on Freedom Drive in West Charlotte. Actor’s Theatre had expected to perform its upcoming season in a location off Louise Avenue, until rising entry costs and the withdrawal of a construction company forced the theatre to look for a new space. Actor’s Theatre was originally located on Stonewall Street in uptown, but was forced to move from that site because of development.
