Whitewater in the Red

The U.S. National Whitewater Center, located on the Catawba River west of Charlotte, has ended its first year of operation. When it opened, officials had projected a budget shortfall of about $400,000. It ended up being about four times that. To explore reasons behind the discrepancy and ways of changing it in year two, WFAE's Scott Graf called the facility's executive director, Jeff Wise.

Design School Coming to Charlotte?

There's word this week that a prominent New England design school is exploring the idea of a branch campus in the Queen City. Eric Spanburg with the Charlotte Business Journal broke the news Wednesday that a Charlotte economic development group has been courting the Rhode Island School of Design to set up shop in Charlotte. WFAE's Scott Graf spoke with Spanburg, and began by asking him to explain the significance of the news.

MP Baptist Out of State Convention

The North Carolina Baptist State Convention this week dropped Myers Park Baptist Church, one year after the Convention approved tighter rules on accepting homosexuals. The rules describe homosexual behavior as a sin and call on church members to turn away from it. Leaders at Myers Park disagreed and brought up their dissent during this week's annual conference in Greensboro. WFAE's Simone Orendain spoke with Myers Park Senior Minister Stephen Shoemaker on the day the Convention voted his church out.

African-American Migration Brings Opportunities

The South is the only region of the country that African-Americans are migrating to in great numbers, and North Carolina is one of the more popular destinations. The state has added about half a million African Americans to its population since the 1980s, and that number is expected to grow. A study released recently by researchers at UNC-Chapel Hill says this is a clear opportunity for businesses and financial institutions. Jessica Jones reports.
