Charlotte City Workers Push For Union Rights

Charlotte sanitation workers held the first of four rallies last night timed to pressure city leaders into giving their labor union more recognition. They want more pay raises, better working conditions and regular meetings between union leaders and city officials.

Charlotte City Workers UE 150 chapter president James Locklear says members will picket city hall every Monday this month, hoping to catch the attention of Democrats who will soon hold their national convention in Charlotte.

Investigation Into State Employees Takes Unusual Turn

A state investigation over alleged misuse of state vehicles has taken a strange turn. The state auditor says two top officials with the Division of Alcohol Law Enforcement used their state cars for personal purposes. Now, their attorneys are demanding the state auditor's office remove the report from its website.

The state auditor's report accuses ALE director John Ledford and his deputy director of using their state owned vehicles to drive from Raleigh to their homes in Asheville on weekends - 500 miles roundtrip.

Lawmakers Override Perdue's Veto of Changes To Racial Justice Act

The North Carolina General Assembly has overridden Gov. Bev Perdue's veto of legislation that rolls back the 2009 Racial Justice Act. The law had given North Carolina's death row prisoners a method to seek a reduced sentence because of racial bias.

The House voted Monday to override Perdue's veto. The vote came about 90 minutes after the Senate voted to override.

CorneliusNews.net: Two Men Charged In Hit And Run Death Of Cornelius Man

Cornelius police confirmed Saturday night they have arrested two Winston-Salem men in the hit-and-run death of a Cornelius man who was struck while walking on Bethel Church Road early Saturday. Witnesses helped police identify a vehicle that was located later a short distance from the incident scene.

Police responded to the report of a hit and run around 1:56 a.m. and found the man "unresponsive lying in the roadway," according to a police report. Kevin Andrew Sweet, 22, of Cornelius was pronounced dead at the scene.
