US Airways Cancels Half Of Flights Due To Storm

Airline Merger Creates Few Immediate Changes At CLT

US Airways and American Airlines officially merged Monday to create the world’s largest airline. Charlotte’s airport, a current US Airways hub, will become the second-busiest in the new airline’s network but customers and employees are not expected to see immediate changes.

Charlotte Airport To Remain Major Hub For New American Airlines

Charlotte's airport will remain a major hub for U.S. Airways for at least three years after the company merges with American Airlines. That's part of a settlement the airlines reached with the Justice Department and state attorneys general today, which had sued to block the merger.

US Airways Says 'Yes' To iPads, Phones, E-Readers Inflight

Portable electronic devices can now be used throughout flights on US Airways.

Go ahead and keep that tablet or e-reader on during your next US Airways flight.

Beginning today, the airline that operates more than 90 percent of flights out of Charlotte Douglas International will allow use of portable electronic devices from start to finish on flights.  Cell phone calls will not be allowed in flight, but customers will no longer be chided by flight attendants to turn off and stow small devices.  Anything weighing over two pounds will still need to go overhead or under the seat during takeoff and landing.

CLT Runway Changes Prompt Noise Complaints, Higher Costs

A federal decision to limit take-off and landing on one of Charlotte Douglas International's four runways has caused a sudden decrease in the airport's capacity and a spike in noise complaints from neighborhoods to the north.  The change may also accelerate plans for a new runway.

Airlines' Attorney: DOJ Got Merger Lawsuit 'Very Wrong'

Attorneys for US Airways and American Airlines say they won't make the first move to settle a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Justice attempting to block the airlines from merging.

The Justice Department contends the merger will make it easier for the remaining mega-airlines – Delta, United and American – to cooperate on prices, rather than compete.  That means airfares will go up and service will decline, warns the lawsuit.  But an attorney for US Airways and American, Rich Parker, says the DOJ is "very wrong."

Charlotte Rejects Airport Compromise

RALEIGH A leading House Republican said Monday night that lawmakers will introduce a new proposal for the Charlotte airport this week after city leaders essentially rejected their proposal for a joint study commission.

The new proposal could make creation of a new airport authority more likely.

“I’m astounded,” Rep. Ruth Samuelson said of the city’s reaction. “I’m deeply, deeply disappointed. We made a good faith, unprecedented (offer). We’re done offering a study.”
