Tuition Decrease at Area Colleges

"Tuition Resets." It’s a buzz term in higher education for schools who say they’re responding to students and parents who say they can’t afford college tuition, with the hikes in rates over the last several years. About a dozen colleges across the US have adjusted their tuition rates recently, and the presidents of two of those colleges in OUR region will join us today. We’ll talk about the decision to lower rates at those schools, what a tuition reset really means, and the overall trend in the cost of college across the US.

South Carolina College Cuts Tuition By 43 Percent

Converse College president Betsy Fleming announced the school would reduce tuition by 43 starting next year.

A women's college in South Carolina is reducing undergraduate tuition by 43 percent. That means tuition at Converse College in Spartanburg  will be $16,500 a year. It's currently about $29,000. College president Betsy Fleming says the move is in response to growing concern about rising tuition.

"I hope that this move will change the course and conversation in higher education, moving away from a high tuition, high discount model to a lower tuition that actually represents cost," Fleming says.
