North Carolina House Votes Down Economic Development Bill, Kills Budget Fix For Teacher Assistants

The North Carolina House Tuesday voted down a bill that would have regulated county sales tax rates and earmarked money for economic development. The move also means many school districts will have to cut teacher assistant positions.

State Budget Negotiations Take Major Step Backward

The smiles were absent on Wednesday when House Senior Budget Chairman Nelson Dollar (left) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Brown (right) clashed over the state budget.

Lawmakers in Raleigh Wednesday took a major step in their budget negotiations.  A step backward.

If there was any sense of congeniality and cooperation at the state capitol it was not found in room 643, where House Senior Budget Chairman Nelson Dollar called to order select members of the House and Senate  to negotiate the now overdue state budget.

State Budget Means Cutbacks For CMS Teacher Assistants

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will cut back the hours its teacher assistants work this year. That's one of several examples Superintendent Heath Morrison gave of how the state budget that passed Wednesday will impact the district.

The budget agreement state House and Senate leaders reached this week cuts funding for teacher assistants by about one-fifth ($120 million) this year.

CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison said that will hurt students.
