  U.S. Senators are poised to pass a measure this week that would mean new taxes for South Carolina online shoppers who frequent Amazon. The state granted Amazon an exemption to collecting sales tax until 2016, but that deal would end if Congress passes the so-called Marketplace Fairness Act. 

The cyber-attack that experts already believe is the largest on a state tax agency - ever - just got bigger. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said Wednesday the tax returns of more than 650,000 businesses may also have been exposed – on top of the 3.6 million individual returns previously announced.

“I am probably more frustrated than you know to have to do these daily press conferences, but what I will tell you is as we go through this process, every time we find out something new we are gonna continue to tell you,” said a grim-faced Haley.

South Carolina officials have added more operators to a hotline for residents to call if they believe they may have been affected during a hacking of the state’s Department of Revenue. About 3-and-half-million Social Security numbers and almost 400,000 credit or debit card numbers were exposed during the security breach, which was first announced Friday. During a press conference Monday, Governor Nikki Haley stressed there’s still plenty of time to sign up for free credit protection service the state is offering in the wake of the hack.
