City Cancels Airport Solar Farm

Charlotte-Douglas officials found installing solar panels in parking lots--like these used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service--could jeopardize tax-exempt bonds.

The City of Charlotte has canceled its plan for an ambitious solar power project at Charlotte-Douglas airport, at least for now. Airport officials say new construction and old bonds make the project unfeasible.

Duke Energy Looks To Almost Double NC Solar

Duke Energy plans to almost double the amount of solar energy its North Carolina utilities use by the end of next year. The utility has about 350 megawatts of solar in the state right now, the size of a small natural gas or coal plant.

UNC Charlotte Team Ready For Solar Decathlon Judging

The UNC Charlotte solar house stands out for its use of concrete polymer on Decathlete Way in Irvine. After construction was completed in Charlotte, it was taken apart and shipped to California. Students finished putting the house back together yesterday.

The UNC Charlotte Solar Decathlon Team is one of 19 teams chosen from all over the world to compete in a U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition.  

For the last two weeks, the team has been putting its house back together after it was taken apart to be shipped from Charlotte to Irvine, California. Michelle Todd is one of two dozen UNC Charlotte students and faculty members at the competition.

UNC Charlotte Students Make Progress On Solar House

UNC Charlotte's Solar Decathlon Team says it's about half-way through completing the construction of its solar house. They were recently nominated from teams all over the world to compete in a U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition.  

The UNC Charlotte team is calling their $300,000 solar house, UrbanEden. It's been four months in the making and you can see the walls now and imagine what it will look like when it's finished.

IKEA-Charlotte Now Operates (Partly) On Sunshine

There are 4,228 solar panels on top of the IKEA store in Charlotte. It's expected to produce about 25 percent of the store's electricity, on average.

Furniture giant IKEA has just installed 4,228 solar panels on the roof of its store in Charlotte. The panels are expected to generate up to half of the store's electricity.
