A field of eight mayoral candidates is now down to two. Jennifer Roberts beat Democratic incumbent Dan Clodfelter by nearly 10 percent.  She faces Republican Edwin Peacock in the general election.

Polls open today for the 2015 municipal election primaries. Normally these are relatively low key affairs. But this year we’ve already seen three new records set.

Primary election day is this upcoming Tuesday, May 6, so today we discussed it with our political science professor, Michael Bitzer of Catawba College who also writes for our political blog the Party Line.

“And so begins a critical period in American politics…that almost no one notices,” is the conclusion of a Brookings Institute report about primary elections in the United States.  A key finding is that in the past three midterms elections, turnout in congressional primaries has averaged 5.4%, 4.6% and 7.5% of the voting age population.
