Dentist Shortage A State, National Issue

A shortage of dentists is both a statewide and national trend, according to a Pew study. Half of all kids enrolled in Medicaid did not receive care in 2011.

In North Carolina, about half of all kids enrolled in Medicaid did not receive dental care in 2011. That's nothing to brag about, but it's in line with the national average, according to a Pew study released Tuesday

State Fights Tooth Decay But Fails Report

The state's Oral Health Section has educational materials for teachers and dentists to raise awareness about sealants.

Sink your teeth into this: about half of all children will have tooth decay before the age of 12. A common procedure called a dental sealant can extract most of that risk. But a new report gives North Carolina, along with only five other states, an “F” for its use of dental sealants. The failing mark stems partially from the lack of sealants administered in high need schools, but also specific grading criteria that state officials say does not score North Carolina’s accomplishments.

Some Elements Of Fiscal Cliff Could Add To State Coffers

A new report says reduced tax credits from the fiscal cliff could lift revenue in some states, although the larger, negative effects will still outweigh the boost.

The White House issued a statement Monday warning that taxes would go up for middle-class families by more than $2,000 on average, if Congress does not prevent the “fiscal cliff”—the series of automatic spending cuts and expiring tax breaks scheduled for the end of the year.
