Retired Army General David Petraeus has agreed to a plea deal with federal prosecutors over allegations that he shared classified information with his biographer Paula Broadwell, with whom he later admitted having an affair. Under the terms of the deal, the former commander in Iraq and Afghanistan could avoid jail time.


Paula Broadwell has mostly stayed out of the public eye since last November, when news broke of her affair with then-CIA director General David Petraeus. On Tuesday, she gave her first public speech since the scandal.

Three days after Paula Broadwell of Charlotte emerged at the center of national controversy, FBI agents spent four hours Monday night searching her family’s Dilworth home.

While investigating an email harassment complaint over the summer and this fall, the FBI had found classified information on Broadwell’s computer. The FBI concluded the information did not come from David Petraeus, who was CIA director until his sudden resignation Friday.

While television news trucks remained stationed outside her Dilworth home throughout the weekend, Paula Broadwell was celebrating her 40th birthday with her family in Washington, D.C., according to a neighbor.

Sarah Curme has been picking up the Broadwell’s paper and cancelling appointments with the family’s piano teacher since the Broadwells left on Thursday.

Curme said Paula Broadwell, the alleged mistress of former CIA Director David Petraeus, and her family is doing pretty well considering the circumstances.
