Ryan: Trump 'Messed Up,' But Censure 'Counterproductive'

Aug 22, 2017

MADISON, Wis. — U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan said he will not support a resolution to censure President Donald Trump over his comments following a white supremacist rally in Virginia, but said Trump "messed up" by saying "both sides" were to blame for violence and that there were "very fine people" among those marching to protect Confederate statues.

When the United States was in the midst of World War I, U.S. Sen. Hiram W. Johnson, an isolationist from California, is credited with coining the phrase “the first casualty when war comes is truth.”  So it seems the same could be said for this year’s political campaigns.

This year’s campaign seems to be taking the “cut and paste” approach by both sides, and highlighting a minute piece of what a candidate says and creating a firestorm out of a dust-up.

It's been a busy week in politics: Mitt Romney has finally chosen his running mate: Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan. The Romney/Ryan kickoff bus tour stopped in Mooresville over the weekend. WFAE political analyst Michael Bitzer joined Duncan McFadyen to talk about all the focus North Carolina is getting in the campaign.

MCFADYEN: Let’s listen to something they [Rep. Ryan and Gov. Romney] said at that campaign stop:

In the game of politics, each team needs its captains. And now, we know who the captains are: for the Democrats, it’s still Obama-Biden. And for the GOP, it’s now Romney-Ryan.

The 2012 election shifted gears Saturday with Mitt Romney’s surprise announcement that Congressman Paul Ryan is his vice presidential nominee.

About 1,700 people packed into the NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville yesterday for what was billed as a victory rally for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan.

Tim Conway of Harrisburg waited outside with his 16-year-old daughter, hoping to get in. He said the choice of Ryan for a running mate makes for a perfect 1-2 punch. He likes that Ryan has experience as chairman of the House Budget Committee.
