Hurricane Matthew impaired or destroyed more than 1 million structures, forced businesses from Florida to North Carolina to close and put thousands of people temporarily out of work.

Goldman Sachs estimates the storm likely caused $10 billion in damage overall, but figures suggest Matthew's effect on the broader national economy will be minimal.

A federal judge has dismissed a challenge to a North Carolina law that says magistrates with religious objections can refuse to marry same-sex couples.

Charlotte Mecklenburg police chief Kerr Putney has given more details about a fatal police shooting Tuesday and his department’s response to protests later in northeast Charlotte.

The recent fatal police shootings of African-American men and the killing of five Dallas police officers have revived discussions aimed at easing tensions between CMPD officers and those Charlotte residents who are wary of them.  At a forum hosted by the NAACP in uptown last night, several hundred people questioned and criticized CMPD. There was also some praise.

The fatal shootings of two African-American men by police this week and Thursday night’s fatal shooting of five police in Dallas have touched local residents. Peaceful marches were held in downtown Charlotte on Thursday and on Friday area residents expressed their thoughts on Charlotte Talks.

A civil lawsuit against CMPD officer Randall Kerrick is on hold for sixty days while his criminal trial proceeds. U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen made that decision Tuesday in response to a request by the city of Charlotte. The civil suit was filed by the family of 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell who was fatally shot ten times by Kerrick in September. Ferrell was unarmed.

Last week, a Mecklenburg County grand jury refused to indict a Charlotte police officer, Randall Kerrick who shot an unarmed black man 10 times. On Monday, a different grand jury indicted Kerrick on a charge of voluntary manslaughter for the September incident.

The indictment came after a judge earlier in the day denied the request of Kerrick's attorneys who tried to block prosecutors from resubmitting the case to the new grand jury.
